If you carry “state minimum coverage” on your automobile and you are the at fault party in an accident, you could be personally liable for any amount over the minimum coverage of your policy. Having policy limits greater than the minimum 25k per person/50k per accident minimum coverage in Virginia will likely save you from losing your savings, your house, or from bankruptcy if you are involved in a serious accident. That additional coverage is available at little additional expense.
Most insurance companies offer something called “med pay.” It is often a very inexpensive addition to your own insurance policy. Med pay will reimburse you for your medical expenses up to a certain amount (usually five to ten thousand dollars) when you are hurt in an automobile accident regardless of who is at fault. You will be reimbursed the entire amount of your medical bill, even if it is also paid by your major medical care coverage. You can then use that money to cover the many expenses that are not immediately recoverable from the insurance of the other party. Med pay is a great deal, and far too few people have it on their own auto insurance policy.
